2019 Points Series Announcement and FAQ’s

We are excited to announce that in 2019, California will have not one, but two regional points series to compete in!  In addition to the So Cal Monster Truck Racing Series, the Nor Cal RC Monster Truck Showdown will be running from April through August that will follow the same class rules, but keep separate points totals.

The Nor Cal RC Monster Truck Showdown will kick off the season at Prairie City SVRA outside of Sacramento on April 20th and will feature qualifying, racing, and freestyle points up for grabs in 2.6 and 2.2 solid axle monster truck classes!  This will be the first of five events that will take place in the spring and summer months throughout Northern California.  More dates and locations will be announced soon as details are finalized.

The top three drivers in each class will receive a cash payout and trophies after the final event.  In addition, each event will have trophies and other prizes for the racing, freestyle, and overall event champions.  Each event will feature single elimination bracket racing with qualifying order determining the bracket and a judged freestyle competition for both 2.6 and 2.2 solid axle monster truck classes.  There will also be a kid’s class with a double elimination bracket and freestyle session at each race.

More details on the event rules and points payout for the series can be found here.

Nor Cal Points Series FAQ’s

Can I compete in both series?

  • Yes!  We are going to work together to make sure these events do not conflict with each other while also doing our best to not schedule them the same weekend as other major RC or popular monster truck events throughout the year.

What if I can’t make every event, can I still race?

  • Yes!  Just register on race day and you will still be eligible for trophies or other prizes at the race you compete at and your points will still be recorded.

What does it cost?

  • Day of registration is $15/truck per class with two trucks maximum in each class.  Kids class is $10/truck.  *Note: some venues have an additional parking charge separate from event registration costs.

What do the event fees go toward?

  • They will be put toward the year end prize pool and help cover the costs of putting on the events such as venue rental, permits, supplies, and other prizes.  The bigger the class, the bigger the prize pool!

Are these going to be the only events going on in CA?

  • No.  This series is not meant to monopolize monster truck races in the state, just a way to race and keep score and pay out prizes to the overall winners at the end!

Can I run the same truck in different classes?

  • Yes, you can change tires to run in both 2.2 and 2.6 classes, however you will pay for entries in both classes.

Can I change trucks throughout the year?

  • The identity of the truck and chassis must remain the same for the sake of points tracking.  For example, you cannot run a Grave Digger at one event and then Max D later.  However you can run different paint scheme variations as long as the truck name/identity stays the same.  Additionally, you cannot swap bodies onto different chassis in the same class at an event; one driver per truck.

Will there be a novice class?

  • Yes, for $10, kids and newbies can race in a randomized, double-elimination bracket before qualifying and freestyle run at the conclusion of the 2.6 Class freestyle competition.  Points will not be kept and prizes are not guaranteed at all events for this class.  Novice class trucks are not subject to the solid axle point series rules.  Two wheel drive and independent suspension trucks are allowed, but must be a 1/10 scale monster truck.

How will the payout work?

  • The top three drivers in the point standings after the final event will receive a cash payout and trophies.  The standard prize pool payout if all three podium positions are separate drivers is: 1st place=50%, 2nd place=30%, 3rd place=20%.  If a driver takes up more than one spot on the podium, the next driver in the standings will get the lower spot, and the percentage payout will be adjusted accordingly where the driver that would have earned two podium positions will get a higher than standard payout.  For example, if a driver has two class entries and comes in 1st place and 3rd place overall, the racer in 4th place will receive the adjusted 3rd place payout (unless that racer came in 2nd, then the 5th place driver would move up).  The driver that came in first and third would get 60% of the payout, second would still receive 30% and the driver that moved up would get 10%.  Basically, three podium position payouts will go to three different drivers.  Additional prizes will also be awarded at the conclusion of the series, more details can be found here.

How are points earned?

  • Qualifying Points: Number of competitors.  For example, in a 10 truck field, fastest qualifier would receive 10 points, second fastest 9, all the way down to the slowest earning 1 point.
  • Racing Points: 5 points are earned with every round completed with the racing winner receiving 5 bonus points.  Byes are considered a win into the next round.
  • Freestyle Points: Freestyle will be scored out of 30 points based on three different aspects: time management, momentum, and the quality of tricks/air during the run.  A 3 point deductions is given if the truck rolls over and the racer wishes to continue the run.
  • Event Bonus Points: Overall event champion will receive 1 bonus point.  If the overall event champion was top qualifier, won racing, and freestyle (with the same truck) an additional bonus point is awarded for the event.
