After a season that has been postponed, undergone date and venue changes, and 4 hard fought rounds of competition, it all comes down to this! We will be crowning our 2020 Points Series presented by JConcepts Champions as well as the Fat Cat Freestyle winners and some special recognition awards too. Let’s meet our contenders and who can play spoiler heading into our the final round.
2.2 Class
Despite not competing in Round 4, Chris Prestwood has been dominant all year and barring a catastrophic day, will be the 2.2 Overall Champion. Chris has yet to lose a round of racing and has a commanding 29 point lead heading into the final round without winning a freestyle competition all season which was his strong suit in 2019.
While Chris may have first all but locked up, the rest of the podium is still very much up for grabs. Jacob Smallwood is comfortably in 2nd place with a 19 point lead, but only one point separates 3rd place Connor Anapol and 4th place Jim Prestwood . It will likely all come down to freestyle and the 2.2 class has had a different winner each round. Anapol currently leads the overall freestyle standings by 11 points which is significant with scores typically being lower in the 2.2 class from shorter runs. Prestwood and Smallwood are still in contention, but will need a huge day to overtake Anapol.
Monster Truck Class
Consistency pays off which is why Wes Harriger and Jeremy Bunting are neck and neck heading to the finish. Harriger’s dominant racing streak came to an end during Round 4 after breakage in qualifying and a quarter final round exit. Bunting capitalized putting both of his trucks in the finals to close the gap and leave Round 4 with a 2 point lead for his “Crash Test Dummy” truck. Bunting’s “Bad Company” currently sits in 3rd, but Prestwood’s “Ride or Die” and last season’s champion Todd Henderson and “Kamikaze” are still lurking and both capable of playing spoiler in racing and getting big scores in freestyle.
While the points series championship might be out of reach, don’t count on Jacob Smallwood or David Heimbigner easing up. Heimbigner was fastest qualifier in Round 4 and the first to beat Harriger all season in racing with his new “Son Uva Digger” and will be looking to take home some event trophies before the season ends. Meanwhile, Smallwood captured the Round 4 freestyle win and is within striking distance of the Fat Cat Freestyle title with his “Dragon Slayer” only trailing Bunting in the standings by 13 points. Prestwood, Henderson, and Harriger are all still in it with only one point separating the three of them.
Will the pressure get to the current leaders? Will breakage come into play? Will there be upsets? Could we end up with a tie? Let’s not forget that last season came down to one point being the difference between the championship and second place. We’ll find out on Saturday, October 24th at AMain Silver Dollar R/C Raceway in Chico!
