It’s the event you’ve been waiting for: the 2021 North vs. South Showdown! The largest solid-axle monster truck event in the west returns to Chico as we once again do battle with our rivals from the So Cal RC Monster Truck Racing Series. This year’s competition will feature a team format with points to be earned in racing and freestyle in the battle for state supremacy on a giant over/under dirt track under the lights at AMain Silver Dollar R/C Raceway on Saturday, September 11th. We are excited to bring Horizon Hobby on board for this event as there will be a Losi LMT Class with trophies for the top three competitors as well as a LMT roller up for grabs! There’s a lot to take in for this event and this page will have all of the latest event information including some FAQ’s.
North vs. South Format
The event will have team captains Jeremy Bunting and the overall-winner of the first North vs South event, Michael Letcher, select matchups for the 32-truck bracket (“main field”) from their respective teams alternating back and forth. The remaining truck matchups will be randomly drawn. Since we anticipate well over 32 entries for this event, there will be a Shootout race for the remaining trucks that will compete for the final spot in the main field. This selection will be done live on YouTube Friday, September 10th. Therefore, all entries must be pre-registered before-hand in order to set the brackets. Please sign up using this registration form.
Racers will designate which truck they wish to have in the primary bracket and which will be in the random draw (which could potentially end up in the Shootout). The captains will race each other with their primary trucks and alternate between selections of matching North vs South racers. When 31 trucks have been selected, the remaining trucks will be randomly paired in the Shootout bracket to win the final 32nd spot in the main field.
On the day of the event, all trucks will get a practice lap in each lane before the Shootout. We will then have the Shootout race to determine who will get the final spot in the main bracket.
Team Scoring
The truck that earns the final spot into the main bracket will earn their team 5 points for winning the shootout bracket. 1 point will go to the respective team of the winning racer of each race in the main field. Additionally, the winning Losi LMT class truck will also earn 5 points for the team they represent. For freestyle, the average score of the team’s trucks will be added to the racing points total to determine the winning team for the event. All trucks from the Shootout and the main bracket are eligible to freestyle and will be judged as they are in both series based on time used, momentum/use of track, and air/tricks out of 30 possible points. Monster truck super-fan Connor Anapol will be an honorary judge for air/tricks, time will be judged impartially on amount of clock used (rule of thumb is a point for every 10 seconds in a 100 second freestyle), and the momentum/use of track scoring will rotate between a North team member judging South team runs and vice versa. There will be an overall racing trophy for the winning racer of the event as well as for the freestyle winner and the California Cup for the winning team.
Losi LMT Class Race
The LMT Class Race will feature Losi LMT chassis trucks only. Trucks can have upgraded parts but must have the original chassis. Aftermarket chassis with LMT axles and drivelines are not eligible. Trucks can run 2S or 3S batteries. If you wish to race in both the LMT class and the North vs South field, the truck must have a spooled center diff and meet the MT Class requirements, however if you only plan on racing in the LMT class race, that is not required. The race bracket will be a randomly drawn, single-elimination bracket with trophies for the entire podium. The race will occur between the end of the North vs. South bracket and freestyle competition.

FAQ’s
Will there be a 2.2 or retro class for this event?
No, this is only for the 2.6 Monster Truck class.
Does this event impact the points standings?
No, this is a special exhibition event, therefore this will not impact points series standings in either racing series.
If I have a season pass, is this event included?
No, all racers will pay entry fees for this race as it is not part of the Points Series.
If I want to race my LMT in both the North vs. South main field and LMT Class, do I pay for one or two entries?
You will pay to enter both classes. Entry fee for the first truck is $15, second truck is $10. All LMT class trucks are $10. Limited to two trucks per class.
How much are raffle tickets?
You will receive a raffle ticket with each truck entry. Additional raffle tickets are available in sets of 3 for $5.
What’s this pre-registration thing all about?
In order to set the brackets, we need to know who is going to be attending and there will be a cutoff on Friday, September 10th in the afternoon before the brackets are made. Payment will not be required in advance. You can pre-register for the event here. This will also help to assign any “special guests” to a team if they typically do not race in either series but wish to attend this event.
Will the LMT Class trucks get to freestyle?
There will be an unscored encore featuring the LMT Class trucks. Order will be determined based on the racing results and trucks will be lined up and sent onto the track every 15 seconds or until the truck that went before rolls/breaks. Once a truck has rolled over, it is done (nobody will be allowed on the track as there will be multiple trucks going at once) and the encore will go on until all trucks have rolled/crashed/broke.
Are there any special stunts this year?
Yes, stay tuned…
Will there be video?
Yes, there will be full event coverage
