2025 Points Series Round 2 Recap

It was a hot and sunny final day of May as the 2nd Round of the 2025 Points Series took place at Rescue RC Raceway, but the racers turned out braving the heat and took on the World Finals-style track.

The day kicked off with the Novice Class that would see a familiar final as Wyatt Leggette would defeat Dave Lucas before qualifying would get underway.

2024’s 2.2 Mini Monster Class Champion Brian Romo made his return to the Points Series setting the fastest qualifying time by over a second with his “Hater Maker” truck. Charles Leggette would make his debut bringing out the “PistenBully” and set the second fastest time of the day with current points leader Jordan Jensen just behind him in third. Romo would make it to the finals after eliminating Jake Jensen’s “Grave Robber” while Leggette knocked out Jordan’s “Thicc Blue Line” in the other semi-finals matchup. In the finals, Romo would pick up where he left off taking the win over Leggette.

The 2.6 Monster Truck Class would see the return of the 2023 and 2024 Champions as Sam Elliott and Isaac Soria made their debuts in Round 2 and were out to shake up the standings. Soria would set the fastest pass of the day with “Lemon Lime Prime” followed by Romo’s “Samson” and Jeremy Bunting’s “Bad Company” setting the three fastest times in the 20-truck bracket.

The second round of racing started with a major upset as David Heimbigner’s 17th-seeded “Velociraptor” knocked out Soria’s “Lemon Lime Prime”. Other notable upsets included 10th-seeded “Excaliber” and Zac Soares eliminating higher seeds “Robo Shark” and “Samson” while Elliott’s “Shaker” took out “Bad Company” setting up a final four of Romo’s “Da Beast”, Soria’s “Nor-Cal Hobbies”, “Shaker”, and “Excaliber”.

In the semi-finals, Soria would power the “Nor Cal Hobbies” truck to a win over Romo while Elliott would eliminate Soares in their third matchup of the day advancing “Shaker” to the final round pitting the past two seasons’ champions against each other for the first time. Both trucks would be even through the first turn with Elliott pulling a power wheelie after the car stack to end of the track and into the turn allowing Soria to pull ahead. However, Elliott would chase him down and take advantage of a bobble in the final turn and take the racing win.

In the Challenger Class, Bunting would put “Titan” in the pole position with Soares entering the class with “Shamrock Shake” taking second and Heimbigner rounding out the top three with the “Torque” loaner second entry. “Shamrock Shake” would earn a bye into the second round before eliminating “Bad Company” and Elliott’s “Fenrir” to make it to the final round.

The big news was the debut of Soares’ new “Excaliber” chassis fabricated by Elliott and making its first passes with tires under it during the practice rounds. After a disappointing 9th place qualifying, “Excaliber” would go on a dominant run cutting through the competition like the sword it’s named after starting off by eliminating Jacob Smallwood’s “El Matador” and then the top-seeded “Titan” and into the finals sending “Lucas Motorsports” to the trailers. Soares would elect to have “Excaliber” get the racing win as both of his entries made the final round.

The final racing class of the day was the Retro Class with Soares taking the top qualifying spot with “Excaliber” and third fastest with “Kodiak” with Bunting’s “Carnage” getting second and earning a bye. In the semi-finals, Heimbigner’s “Flyin’ Hawaiian” would knock out “Excaliber” after Soares experienced power issues while “Carnage” eliminated “Kodiak” setting up a shafy leafer vs. Clodbuster final round. In the end, Bunting would continue his unbeaten streak putting “Carnage” in the winner circle.

The day wrapped up with freestyle starting with the optional Challenger class going for a minute or the first rollover. “Titan”, “Torque”, and “Ragnarok” would all get the full 5 points, “Flyin’ Hawaiian” and “Fenrir” received 3, “El Matador” 2, and “Shamrock Shake”, “Bad Company” and “Lucas Motorsports” received 1.

In the 2.2 Class, Jordan Jensen would take the freestyle win by one point over Romo after filling the clock without a rollover and remains in first place going into Round 3. However, Romo would have enough points to take the overall win for the day.

The 2.6 Monster Truck Class would finish up the day with some wild runs and destruction. Wyatt Leggette and the “Mammoth Mountain Monster” would go out early and set the bar very high with a wild run filling the clock without a roll scoring 23 points. The score would hold through most of the field with valiant efforts from Soares’ “Excaliber”, Bunting’s “Carnage”, Jensen’s “Silver State Smasher”, and Soria’s “Lemon Lime Prime” with only two trucks remaining. Soria then put on a show with his “Nor Cal Hobbies” entry filling the clock with the run of the day that included big air, multiple flips, saves including one into a moonwalk putting him in the lead with a 26. Elliott would put forth a worthy effort that might have won most days with his “Shaker” coming up just short with a 23 leading to a tie for the overall event win. Soria would receive the additional bonus point after finishing higher in qualifying.

A huge thank you to all of the racers that came out for Round 2 and endured the heat and kept the event flowing! Special shoutout to Brandon Blanco for getting video in the sun all day and David on the mic with DJ Jacob Smallwood. It would not have been possible without our amazing sponsors: JConcepts, Blackmarket RC, AMain Hobbies, EcoPower RC, Gens Ace, and Flyin’ Hawaiian RC and Rescue RC Raceway for allowing us to hold our event on the oval track.

The Points Series will be taking a brief “Summer Vacation” as Jacob Smallwood, Sam Elliott, Zac Soares, David Heimbigner, and Jeremy Bunting will be competing at the Losi RC Championship as part of the Monster Jam World Finals in Salt Lake City this Fourth of July weekend. Round 3 will be held at the Outback Raceway Oval at AMain Hobbies in Chico for a night race July 19th!
